Kickbike to become demonstration sport at Olympic Games 2016
By Peter Larris, ea-press
It has been no small surprise when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that they’ll be reviving the tradition of demonstration sports for the Olympic Games 2016. The last time demonstration sports were presented was in 1992, at the Games in Barcelona.
„There are so many sports which gained an immense popularity worldwide that we couldn’t close our eyes any longer and decided to end the hiatus of demonstration sports“, the IOC proclaimed on its press conference earlier today. When it came to presenting the selected sports the assumingly greatest surprise was the decision for kickbiking, besides such prestigious sports like snooker and kayak polo.
„This is a great day for our sport“ says Thijza Brouwer, secretary of the Nederlandse Autoped Federatie (naf) and member of the committee of the International Kicksled & Scooter Association (IKSA). „There are so many dedicated kickbikers around the world and it is so wonderful to be recognized by the IOC.“
„Wow, that is amazing. I still don’t know what to think and to say, but that’s the biggest thing that could ever happen. Stunning.“ was the commentary of Lars Kessler, Germany’s champion and current leader of the kickbike world ranking, whom the news reached during his well deserved holidays.
Reactions from kickbikers all around the world mirror the same mixture of incredulity and overwhelming joy. Kickbikers from the Ultima K.LAP Team in Prague organized a spontaneous street party as did kickbikers in Finland, the Netherlands and the USA.
A spokesman of the IOC stated that „we’ve been following these athletes for quite some time and the remarkable achievements have finally convinced us to give this sport a chance to present itself to a greater audience.“
